Making the Switch

Part of living a more sustainable lifestyle, is about moving towards a more simple lifestyle. Even with an Urban Homestead, it’s important to live more simply and sustainably. With this time in, I made a few household changes recently that I wanted to share with you!

I made the switch to Bamboo Toothbrushes, Reusable Silicone Zip Baggies, and Reusable Cling Wrap!

I was so excited to make these changes! I knew these changes would be better for my household, but the environment as well! I’m all about our Mother Earth, so I’ll do all I can to help her!

Starting with the toothbrushes. I found these bamboo toothbrushes with colored bristles. Many of the toothbrushes on the market have clear, white, ir black bristles. I was worried about these cause there’s no way I’m sharing a toothbrush with my husband! I, luckily, found these with colored bristles. The bristles are made from recycled plastics and bamboo is very sustainable as it grows so quickly!

They are wonderful! The handle is a little thicker than plastic toothbrush handles, but you get used to it. The bristles are thicker and much sturdier than plastic brushes. This was a little harder to get used to, but I actually ended up really liking it – it feels like my teeth are cleaner using these bristles! I highly recommend making this switch. It’s an easy switch that can make a big impact!

The next switch I made was the Silicone Zip Baggies. I was going through zipper bags constantly. I’d wash and reuse most of them, but I was still throwing away so many plastic bags. I was so upset with myself for adding more and more to landfills. This change was one I wanted to make ASAP!

I love them! They are thick and sturdy! However, they aren’t perfect. The ones I got have rounded corners, so you can’t get food as packed in there as square bags. You also can’t turn them inside out to dry them, but I remedied this by laying them with the mouth open on a kitchen towel and they dried out no problem! This is a great addition to the kitchen and I hope you’ll give them a try.

The last switch I’ve made as of now is Cling Wrap. Like zipper bags, I was going through plastic wrap like crazy! I hated how much single use plastic I was using! I did lots of research on cling wrap changes. I found beeswax wrap to be the best option. It’s cloth covered in natural beeswax. The wax sticks to itself and other items making it clingy and wonderful for wrapping around bowls and leftovers!

I picked a lovely cloth pattern for mine. There were so many options! It wraps and holds really well and you can clean them with water or a towel. You just can’t heat them or use warm water or the wax will melt off. Other than that, they are great!

One thing I do want to add is that I waited until I used all my plastic tools prior to buying new, sustainable tools. I did this, because in the long run, it would be less sustainable to buy new when I still have good items. With the factory outputs and all, it’s best to wait until you need them before buying. My recommendation is to make plans for what you want and when it’s time to buy, purchase the sustainable options instead of the traditional one! You won’t regret it!

I’m not stopping with these switches though! My next steps for sustainable changes are homemade toothpaste, shampoo pods, and homemade soap! Tell me in the comments your thoughts and what you plan on switching to! I look forward to hearing from you! 😁
